Day 7 - Hello Lerwick

Lerwick, population roughly 7000, is the main town of the Shetlands.  I've  never been  to  the Shetlands before  and they are not that easy to get to even if you're  from the UK,  so it was nice to stop there as part of this cruise.

We docked early and had our first day for  a while  without rain.  Although there were a number of excursions being offered around the island (mostly  involving Shetland ponies), Becky and I decided to walk into  town and have a look round by ourselves.  Despite being so remote it was much like any small town in the UK with a Boots and a Tesco.

The buildings are quite quaint and we found a nice cafe to have some homemade treats and a coffee.  We walked along the seafront and  visited  all the gift shops. We also saw the Viking ship made for the up helly aa festival,  which was anchored in the  harbour.

We stopped  at Fort Charlotte and managed to make it back to the ship just as it started to rain.

After all that walking we spent the rest of the day having  a  late afternoon tea and hanging out in the hot tub.

  1. I don't even remember Fort Charlotte, though I must have seen it as we stayed in Lerwick for a week. Dave remembers it mainly because he was harassed by a seagull!
